Beware of this Vacuum!

I looked at a lot of other vacuums before choosing this one. It SEEMED to be built well and the design/engineering would be very handy and effective. I got it home and was amazed at how well it picked up dirt. To my disappointment however, after a week of use, it started to malfunction. First, I noticed the brush roller seemed to stop spinning on carpet. Then shortly afterward, the vacuum would shut itself off repeatedly after the first couple minutes of operation. The manual says this vacuum is designed to shut itself off when there is a blockage inside it to prevent overheating. Well I checked and rechecked for a blockage, cleaned the filter and brush roll but it still did the same thing. I contacted Electrolux customer service and they would not admit this was a common problem nor would they tell me if there was a fix for this problem but if you research reviews on other web sites, it appears to be happening quite often. Instead of going through the hassle of going to my nearest service center 40 miles away, I returned the vacuum for a refund. I really liked the vacuum at first but will not try another one. I found a Hoover Elite Windtunnel with a 6 year warranty. Don’t bother with this model, you will eventually regret it. By the way, if you are looking for the quality Electrolux vacuum of the past, these are not it. These are made in China by the same company that makes Eureka. The old Electrolux was bought by a company called Aerus Lux.

Won’t last

The first one lasted about two months and then the roller brush stopped working correctly. I took it back to the store and they gave me a new vacuum. Then two months later, the roller brush stopped working on the second one. One of the end caps on the roller brush was bad. I called the company and they sent me a new one but while putting in the new roller I noticed the belt had started to fall apart. The belt was less than two months old and half of the rubber was warn away. So, I returned it for a full refund. Bottom line is this vacuum has great suction but is not built to last. I am now shopping for a new vacuum.

Brush roller

I’ve had the same problem as other reviewers. The brush roller on mine stopped working after less than a month. The end cap on one side had melted. I called the company and they sent a new one. After about a month and a half the check brush roll light came on. The problem seems to be the way the end cap is designed it lets hair get in there and stop it from spinning. I decided to be diligent about cleaning out the hair, since I only vacuum one 5×8 rug I figured I’d take it apart once a month and clean it out. I guess that wasn’t enough because it only took two weeks this time. The end cap is melted again and I’ll need to buy a new one.

I did a little survey not long ago in the weight room at the YMCA to find out why persons were there and what they were hoping to achieve. Most of their answers had to do with one or all of three things:

• Get tight, well-shaped buttocks,

DC 24, lightweight delight comes up short with its hose

I bought the DC 24 to replace a small vacuum and was my first Dyson purchase (though I have used them regularly in the past). I would not recommend this vacuum to replace a dedicated large upright. Dyson uses “airwatts” to specify the power of the vacuums and the DC 24 has 115 airwatts vs. 220 airwatts for the DC 25 and DC 15. Not knowing how many airwatts other vacuums use, I can only guess similar comparisons to other brands.

What to Like
=================
The DC 24 vacuum is lightweight 11.5lbs (DC25 16.1lbs and DC15 19.95lbs) and can go up and down stairs without problems (3 story condo). In fact, instead of using the hose attachment for the stairs I prefer to use the vacuum itself. It has a nicely placed handle in the front for this function (like a weed trimmer). You have to hold it out away from your body, as the brushes don’t spin if the unit is placed upright.

Despite being lightweight and lower power, it has consistent suction and still get’s a lot of dirt and dog hair out of the carpet.

The “Ball” allows the vacuum to access small, hard to reach areas without using the attachment. It is similar to using a swivel head on a mop. It handles my hardwood floors well, and now has replaced my sweeper.

The no-mess canister, easy to dump out with just a push of a button.

The washable hepa filter. This is one reason I do not have a problem with paying more for a Dyson. Effective heppa filtration requires regular replacement and that adds up in extra dollars. The dyson solves that with an easy clean filter.

5 year warranty. You will probably experience a disconcerting feeling when it’s out of the box and it seems like flimsy construction. I usually destroy vacuums and so far this vacuum has held up well. I think the flimsy feeling comes from it’s flexibility, the adjustment points and the ball. Trust me, I have dropped it a few times down a flight of stairs on the hardwood and it still looks and works as good a new.

Compact storage… that goes hand in hand with light weight, but it also telescopes down in height to fit under shelves for storage.

Coolest Dyson feature for me is the no-tool brushbar access/removal. Makes it very easy to remove obstructions from the brushbar without a tool set.

What not to Like

The attachment is difficult to convert, this is not unique to this Dyson model. Some cleaver engineer came up with a way to make this attachment compact and self contained, but impossible to convert the first 10-15 times you use it. Dyson does have more expensive models that have easier to use attachments. After using their products for awhile, I have become a Dyson attachment Jedi Master.

The hose for the attachments is short. It can’t reach my 10′ ceilings without lifting the base up off the floor. I recommend the Dyson’s flexible attachment for dust and/or cobwebs.

Other Notes

The vacuum has trouble with large items (clumps of dog toy stuffing) that big vacuums normally don’t hiccup on. It either doesn’t have the brush head height or the plumbing for large items. It’s not really a negative for me, as I learned early on to pick up big items that might destroy a perfectly working vacuum motor. I didn’t have the same problem with using only the attachment.

Light, Compact, Expensive

I had a very hard time choosing between the DC18 (slim model) vs the brand new DC24 (ball model). When it came down to it, my girlfriend liked the compact size and light weight of the DC24 due to that fact we live in a fairly small apartment.

Both machines are about the same price in most stores, and I personally felt that the DC18 would be a better deal. However, after playing with both models the weight and size of the machines was very noticeable.

This machine (DC24) is a breeze to use and sucks well. It seems a little weaker than other models, but it gets the job done in our apartment with carpet, wood floors, and pseudo-tile. I was skeptical but I’m glad I made the purchase.

Pros:
- Easy to carry
- Convenient storage, aesthetically pleasing
- Powerful enough to keep us clean
- Ball ‘gimmick’ actually is useful

Negs:
- Electric cord could be longer
- Vacuum sucking power not as strong as other models (obviously)
- The parts are initially a little tricky to click into place
- Expensive

Small than I thought!

When I discovered this model, I did the research; Dyson’s web site, this one, and other sellars. I found little information on it, but I had a Dyson DC15 “ball” vacuum in the past and decided to order it. I couldn’t make up my mind between this one and the larger DC25. Other than measurements, the only difference that I could find anywhere, was that this model’s handle retracted for easier storage. Guess what, this thing is as small as the DC18, only this model as the ball. Other than the size, it’s a great vacuum and typical Dyson.

It works great, suction is fantastic. It’s perfect for an apartment or someone who wishes a lightweight easy-to-use vacuum. The hose system leaves something to be desired. It is cumbersome and somewhat difficult to utilize. One has to pull out the handle, reverse it, and attach the short hose to it. It’s not as simple as the other models. Also, the cord is short and it the only accessory that comes with it is the brush. No extension or crevice tool.

As I said earlier, this is a great vacuum for an apartment or for someone that wants something lighweight. I wished that there was more information available before I ordered it. Otherwise, I would have ordered the larger DC25.

Reinforce your counters

I have yet to see a blender do everything perfectly. This blender isn’t likely to go very far on your counter; maybe not because you’ll use it all the time, but because it’s a pain to lift. Good if you have dedicated bar space, but you’d like to be able to use it for regular kitchen work too. I don’t really use a blender for chopping, the knife and kitchen robot are better for me, but for liquids it’s the way to go.

Questionable features are the digital timer and flashing lights, I don’t know about Cuisinart’s forays into electronics. I would expect those things to fail before the motor. And why a glass jar with a “durable” plastic handle, huh? As if they were trying to save weight on this one. It’s some unnecessary cost-cutting that lowers the robustness a bit and makes cleaning a little trickier.

Separate ice crushing button and being able to add things through the top are both helpful features, and the warranty is excellent, they will usually stand by their products.

A Glorious Smoothie Machine, But…

I had this unit for two weeks and used it once, or sometimes twice a day. It makes glorious smoothies! Unfortunately, it’s so noisy that you can’t speak to someone standing next to you without shouting (96db at the operating position, if you care). It’s impractical: there are lots of little nooks & crannies for food to be trapped in. It can’t pour for @#%*… who designed that jar?! But it makes glorious smoothies!

One morning I was admiring the glorious smoothie process when I thought I heard a change in the motor’s pitch. My nostrils began to detect a delicious toasted aroma. Little-by-little the smell grew more-and-more acrid, until I realized that a delicate haze was permeating the kitchen. I switched off the blender and lifted the jar, only to see a cloud of black smoke waft into the room. Had I burned out the motor? No! The little high-speed spindle that rotates the blades inside the jar had over-heated and melted the plastic surround! When the plastic was gooey, it slowed the motor down — once it had cooled, it fused solid, hopelessly locking the motor.

It’s going back to the store, where I’ll ask for a replacement. Why am I bothering to replace an impractical, noisy, poorly designed fire-starter? Well, it might be a one-off… and did I mention the glorious smoothies?

Smells like burning tires!

We’ve had our Cuisinart for over a year and use it infrequently. One of the reasons why it gets so little use is the size and the weight. This is a heavy, heavy blender. And while I normally equate heavy industrial kitchenware with quality, in this case, I’m afraid Cuisinart has let us down. I never stress the motor on our model, yet even blending salad dressing, I get a faint whiff of burning rubber or… There is also an issue with the actual glass, the lip of the blender is so wide that pouring liquids is a pain–tons of spills. I have a feeling that Cuisinart’s best men/women were out to lunch the day this design was passed. Maybe we can blame it on the interns. And while pictures of the product look nice, seeing the thing sitting on my counter, well, it’s so large and bulky that that is exactly how it looks: Large and Bulky. No real elegance and it’s not funky cool the way KitchenAid mixers are. Seems to me we got more longevity and easier use out of my cheaper model that I tossed to make way for this one.

Looking to tint your own windows? Window tinting is a comparatively difficult endeavor, but with goodnatured tolerance and proper coaching, you may achieve your desired results.

Start by working in a clean and dust free environment. Start cleaning the glass with window cleaner and a lint free cloth, working from the top downwards. It is essential to get the window glass specially clean for the best finish.

Next, remove anything from the vehicle that will obstruct your workspace. Remove the door panels, and the rubber wipes and seals from the doors. These may already be attached to the door panels. Once these are removed, clean any areas of the glass not yet clean. If you are fortunate sufficient to have a hatchback, remove the rear hatch to make the installation easier.

Start with the rear window first. It is always the most unmanageable to do due to the fixed space and it is shape. Many rear windows have a compound curve to them, which is very difficult to cover correctly. We will alleviate this problem by creating our window tint film pattern on the outside of the window. If you have got rid of the rear hatch, this is not necessary. Lay out a couple of long strips over the outside rear window that overlap at the edges. Carefully cut the outside form of the rear window as close to perfective as possible, being sure to radius (or round) any pointed edges. You may do this by placing a coin in the corner and carving around it. Radius edges tend to not peel as without apparent effort as a pointed edge.

With the form cut out for the rear window you may transfer the film to the inside of the car. Spray the glass with the window film solution and utilise the pieces incisively as you did on the outside of the car, leaving the edges of the pieces to overlap slightly. Squeegee the air bubbles and solution from the film, starting in the middle of the center piece and working your way outwards. Then move to the top, and work from the top down, being careful to squeegee any air and solution from the overlapping seams.

Once the film is used and all solution and air bubbles have been removed, take an exacto knife or razor blade and cut the overlapping pieces where they overlap. You may be sure to get a straight cut by using a straight edge like a ruler. Take care not to cut into any rear defroster wires when doing this. If done correctly, this method will give you a seamless looking back window. You may again take the squeegee or cloth and (carefully) go over the area again for smoothness. Wipe it arid with a lint free cloth.

The other windows will be a little having little impact than the rear window. You may give rise to a template for these windows by cutting the window shape out of freezer paper or wax paper. Take the template and cut out the precise shape of the remaining windows and implement the window tint as before, being sure to radius the edges.

Window tint is comparatively inexpensive, so if you mess up a sheet or a cut, just replace it. Your finished product will look as good as the crusade you put into it. Good Luck, and stay TUNED!

Works just like it promises

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who finds those compressed air can things completely useless in cleaning crap out of my electronics. It’s bad enough taht they’re bad for the environment, they also don’t work as well as the price tag says they should. Thank goodness for this attachment set!

All hype aside, this product works exactly as the makers claim. Use the power of your vacuum to get all the crap out of your keyboard, CPU, stereo and anywhere else. I particularly like the brushes.

I’ve also found that the dust I’m after is stubborn. You really do need the full power of a vacuum to get at it. So forget those handheld deals that hook into your USB port or whatever. This product is cheaper than a lot of them and works better than all of them.

Finally, I can clean all the dust bunnies from our computer and the keyboard. Fits very nicely onto the hose of our Hoover. It also works well in cleaning under the lazy Suan in our cupboards, where regular attachments are too big. This is a good buy for the money.
