What are you going to do when you retire? You planned it all out, right? “We are going to travel.” Well you will travel. You will go to weddings and funerals. At primary you may take a few nice trips but nice trips gobble up cash like a peacock gobbles corn. Also, if you travel by air, your trip is ruined by the airlines who pester you from pillar to post. “Take off your shoes!” So we old folks soon become confined to quarters. Oh, we may go to the chili contest at the VFW. We may go to the cemetery or park on Veterans’ Day and solute the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance. We may go to a church social. And, of course, we may go to the Senior Center for baked beans and frankfurters. Most of the time we sit at home in front of the television and watch old movies and game shows. If you moved close to the grand-kids thinking they would drop by to see you now and then, think again. Old people are not what grand-kids have in mind. Your neighbors are too busy to think with regards to the old folks next door. You only see church folks on the weekend and they hardly ever drop by to see you at home. You and your spouse (or that person you are living with) are on your own. You must do something to keep from going crazy. Here are galore things you may do: Develop Your Spirituality After all, it will soon be time to meet your Maker. You will have to bone up for the Question and Answer Period: St. Peter: “Before you come through that gate, what did you do to make you think you were good sufficient to get in here? You can’t get in here unless you are perfect, you know.” You had better have better answers than that. I suggest volunteering to empty bedpans at a nursing home. That ought to do it! Strengthen Your Mind My wife and I play a game called “Find the Purse.” We’ve been married for over 57 years for the duration of and before which my wife carried her purse everyplace she went. Now she has no need for the purse but she has the habit. I have a sign in giant letters above the washer saying, “Leave Your Purse in the Closet. You don’t need it!” However, she doesn’t read the sign, objects to the sign, and gets her purse out of the closet. She then quickly looses the purse. Now all we have to do is find it. She is very clever in regards to putting it away in a heap of place we haven’t seen before. And she has the habit of wrapping things in cloth to make finding them harder. I ordinarily do more thinking than looking. I find the purse much more immediate that way. You may see that this is a outstanding mind builder. However she claims I’m losing my mind over loosing her Social Security and Insurance cards. We stopped looking for her glasses. She has a half-dozen pair around here somewhere. Great fun! Build Your Body I moved my body builder thing that lets me lift my body weight with my arms and legs and tread mill into the living room where I may look at them. I move them out in front of the television in the winter and then back in the spring. I am told that getting on those things may be good for your health. However, I’m more lucky to stumble and break my clavicle just attempting to get on or off the contraptions. If the weather is warm sufficient we walk over to our neighbor’s house and walking is good too. The main thing, so they say, is to stay active. Well it’s hard to stay active if you never are active. And as for Saint Peter, not anyone is perfect! Fly Old Glory! |
